The fun things about movies is that they’re typically situations that wouldn’t – and couldn’t – happen in real life. Take Star Wars for example. As much as some fans might want it to happen, politicking and warring with a bunch of different species from different planets and galaxies just isn’t where we’re at right now.
Another one of these fantastical fiction scenarios is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. In the film, Benjamin Button, played by renowned actor Brad Pitt, was born with a rare and unique condition. He was born as an old man whose body continues to get younger as the man ages.
While this reversed type of aging is pure fiction, one little boy from Bangladesh is being compared to Benjamin Button and his rare aging condition.
Bayezid Hossain is a four-year-old boy from Bangladesh who was born with a very rare genetic condition. The condition, known as Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome, or progeria, causes Bayezid’s body to age much more rapidly than his mind.
So, while the little boy’s mind and personality progresses like a normal child’s, his body gets physically older much more quickly. The progressive genetic disorder can actually cause an individual to age at about eight times the normal aging rate.
The disorder significantly raises the risk of things like heart attack and stroke. Because of this, a child who suffers from progeria has an average lifespan of about 13 years. Fortunately, less than one in one million children are born with the condition.
Bayezid is a unique case, however. Not only does the four-year-old boy suffer from progeria, which has caused his face to swell and his eyes to sink in, but he also has another rare disorder called cutis laxa, which causes his skin to hang loosely off his frame.
So, while Bayezid’s condition may remind people of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, their stories are actually pretty different. They do have one thing in common, however; both boys have had to remain strong in a world that doesn’t typically like those who are different.
Bayezid has been ridiculed by the others in his community since he was born. His mother, Tripti Khatun, who had the boy when she was just 14 years old, explained that the townspeople all flocked to see the abnormal child when he was born. While they were all interested, they were very unsupportive.
Tripti also explains that she, too was shocked by Bayezid’s appearance when he was born. She admits, “I was terrified to see him when he was born. He was just flesh and bones. He looked like an alien and it was heartbreaking for me.”
However, Tripti also explains that Bayezid is very lovable and intelligent for his age. She shares that her four-year-old son can hold great conversation and is full of personality.
But Tripti worries constantly for her son. Bayezid tries to live and play like a normal child, but he suffers from constant joint pain. His mother also admits that his condition gets worse day by day.
“My son isn’t a normal baby and it’s tragic for any parent to know that his child will not survive for long,” the young mother admits. Bayezid’s financial situation also isn’t ideal in helping the boy to live as long as possible.
In the meantime, Tripti and her family are set on helping Bayezid live as normal a life as possible. The little boy just wants to have fun and play like other children. He finds a lot of support in his cousins, who like to hang out and play ball with Bayezid. The four-year-old also really likes to draw.
He may be suffering from rare genetic disorders, but Bayezid seems determined to remain happy and relatively carefree as any other four-year-old.
